The Trusses Road project in Bradwell on Sea involved the transformation of a World War II timber barracks into a stylish and spacious family home. Initially proposed as a simple extension, the project evolved into the complete design of a five-bedroom chalet bungalow. James Howell Designs was given full creative freedom by the client, who was also the homebuilder, allowing for a unique blend of traditional external aesthetics combined with a contemporary and modern interior.

Externally, the home maintains a classic, timeless appearance that respects the surrounding architectural context while introducing subtle modern twists. This balance ensures that the property fits comfortably within its environment while standing out for its thoughtful design details. Inside, the interior spaces are bright, open, and tailored to modern living, showcasing clean lines and contemporary finishes that contrast beautifully with the traditional exterior.
The ground floor was constructed using conventional building methods, featuring a reliable oil-fired boiler and underfloor heating throughout. This system provides efficient and comfortable warmth, creating a cozy living environment that caters to the family’s needs. The use of underfloor heating also allows for unobstructed wall spaces and a sleek interior aesthetic.

One of the key structural features of the Trusses Road home is the use of a Glulam supporting ridge beam, which allows for a vaulted roof design.
